Developing the Eye

I have always had a love for art and people, constantly drawing and entering my work in local art competitions during high school.  But I never felt as if I could express myself emotionally through my work.  It was almost as if my soul never quite became integrated with my art.  But then I discovered photography in early 2001.  I quickly purchased my first single lens reflex camera, an Olympus OM-2.  Almost overnight I realized that through the medium of photography I could explore the world in a brand new way, under a different light, and through a new eye each time I picked up my camera. Very quickly I began making black and white photographs of normal objects taken at unusual angles in interesting light, usually very close up.  These early pictures are important to me because  they were necessary to develop the photographic eye that I have been cultivating since I took my first thoughtful photograph.  I soon bought black and white darkroom equipment and began to print my own photographs.  This added a new level of excitement and control to my love of photography.  At that point my passion for the craft was unparalleled to anything I'd ever been  involved with in my life.  Light became my love.  I began Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in the fall of 2001 and decided to major in photography. The school emphasizes darkroom techniques far

more than it teaches the essentials of commercial photography, studio portraiture, and photojournalism... practical types of photography that would benefit me in the real world.  So in 2003 I left LSU for one semester to participate in an exchange program at Utah State University in Logan, UT.  It was there that I realized I should major in journalism to one day pursue my goal of being a magazine photojournalist.  Upon returning to LSU, I switched my major to print journalism with a minor in photography.  While at LSU for five years I gained experience as chief staff photographer at The Daily Reveille (LSU newspaper) from the fall of 2004 through spring of 2005.  I did an internship with InRegister magazine during 2005 as a photographer/writer. I currently keep busy with my wedding/bridal/portrait photography throughout the year and do freelance photography for 225 Magazine and The Platinum Record, the local Council On Aging magazine. I became incorporated in March 2006. I am now officially Eye Wander Photo, Inc. Also in 2006, I purchased professional video equipment to begin shooting events and band/product promotional videos. I have since dropped out of LSU to pursue a career in photography and video production. I am opening a studio soon.

About my work

My photography is a mixture between photojournalism, fine art and formal portraiture.  The subject I enjoy the most is portraiture, because through the act of making a portrait I get to know people beyond their polished facades.  In general, I want my portraits to show the vulnerable side of humans.  This is why I gravitate towards fine art portraiture as opposed to formal portraiture.  Humans are creative beings with diverse personalities and deserve to be portrayed in a creative manner. This Web site was designed by me using FrontPage 2003. If you think it sucks, it's because I'm not a Web designer...yet.

Yours truly
